I am the author of the Sunshine Elementary chapter book series, which was first published in December 2019.
My Story
The moment I held my first published book in my hands.
At the end of 2019, I released the first book in a series I wrote for elementary-aged children. Sunshine Elementary is a story crafted to plant seeds of kindness, inclusivity, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. Weaving together lessons learned in parenting and my own life experiences, I tell the story that I wish I had heard as a child.
While Sunshine Elementary is my first book written to share with the world, I have been writing—and dreaming about publishing—since I myself was a kid. With punk rock roots, a kind heart, and progressive soul, my hope is to fill a gap with this influential, heartwarming series.
IF YOU CAN’T FIND IT, CREATE IT.
When my oldest child started reading independently, I was floored by how negatively many of the chapter books portrayed kids. I believe whole-heartedly that children are intrinsically kind, loving and capable, and that they grow in the direction that we view them. I feared that these books were planting a seed for kids to normalize lying, bullying, being unkind to one another and dreading school. I felt that if kids could instead read about characters who were confident, capable, and respectful, these positive examples would empower them to handle situations with kindness and problem solving skills. Because it's in my nature to do so, I simply decided to bring this desire for a book series to life myself. Much of the inspiration for Sunshine Elementary comes from my own amazing children and the community within their beautiful Montessori school, where kindness is a cornerstone of the curriculum.
